Chór powstał w 1998 r. z błogosławieństwa Patriarchy Aleksieja II. Jest głównym zespołem chóralnym Rosyjskiej Cerkwi Prawosławnej Patriarchy Moskiewskiego i całej Rusi Kirilla.. Jego założycielem był profesor Nikołaj Gieorgijewskij, który dyrygował chórem do 2004 roku. Chór liczy około 40 śpiewaków, w przeważającej części z wyższym wykształceniem muzycznym. Głównym zadaniem jest uczestnictwo w nabożeństwach celebrowanych przez zwierzchnika Rosyjskiej Cerkwi Prawosławnej. Chór towarzyszy mu podczas licznych podróży po całej Rosji i poza jej granice. Śpiewa też podczas nabożeństw w głównej świątyni Rosji ? Uspienskim Soborze moskiewskiego Kremla. Repertuar chóru to przede wszystkim pieśni zawarte w Moskiewskim Śpiewniku Liturgicznym (?Moskowskij Obichod) i cerkiewne arcydzieła kompozytorów rosyjskich. Chór kultywuje tradycje śpiewacze Moskiewskiego Chóru Synodalnego i ostatniego dyrygenta zburzonego w 1931 r. Soboru Chrystusa Zbawiciela ? Pawła Czesnokowa. Obecny dyrygent chóru, Ilja Tołkaczow, umiejętności dyrygenckie zdobywał i doskonalił u najlepszych dyrygentów Rosyjskiej Cerkwi Prawosławnej.
